Everyone hates those quests and missions where you have to bring a stupid hero you never would have chosen otherwise - I came up with some pretty decent builds that will do a fine job in HM and don't require you to spend any money on weapons or runes, although you're welcome to do so if you want.

100B is one of the least mentally taxing builds in existence, so it's ideal for a hero. Heroes are great at interrupting though, so it would be silly not to have Savage Slash. They can also tell when an enemy is bleeding, so Gash is pretty powerful. Barbarous Slice will always inflict bleeding (unless the foe is immune), because it triggers the end of Enraging Charge.
Melonni

Although VoS is one of the most powerful builds in the current meta, hero AI is utterly hopeless with teardowns, so they can't be trusted with Eremite's Attack. Still, the build is good enough for the few times you need to use Melonni, as it has enough over-powered skills to plough through anything. Lyssa's Assault takes advantage of heroes' instant interrupt reactions.
Margrid the Sly

This build probably looks a bit unusual, and so it should: it's a ranger hero build. Margrid is only required for Pogahn Passage, Dasha Vestibule, and some easy secondary quests. Dasha is by far the hardest of these, so the build is entirely geared for that. Ranger heroes are ideal for interrupting, and they use Sloth Hunter's Shot quite effectively. Extinguish is just there to prevent Searing Flames from doing any damage, although there are several other sources of Burning in Dasha.
Zhed Shadowhoof

Enemies are rarely balled up in general PvE, and even when they are, heroes are hopeless at choosing central targets. Invoke Lightning (and its non-elite sibling Chain Lightning, and their cute cousin Arc Lightning) are a great solution to this problem. Believe it or not, Zhed won't spam Invoke and Chain until he's completely Overcast - he actually manages Overcast really well! The build also looks like it lacks energy management, but Shock Arrow actually provides enough to keep fighting constantly.

If you like monk hero healers, you won't have any need of this, but I let my necros do all my healing, and RoJ is the only real choice for damage. Unfortunately, heroes aren't very proactive with Reversal of Damage, but they do use the signets quite well, and remove conditions and hexes.
